Nice one Sir, brilliant idea. Andy

I really hope that England has responded to your appeal. I’m beginning to feel, as I hope the men and women feel in our armed forces, that as they do their duty the people are behind them. DT, Bournemouth

Thank you to all the troops! You’re doing a great job. AB

What a brilliant idea, many thanks to all for their hard work, which is much appreciated by most of the public (the silent majority). So a great big CHEERS!! GA, Weymouth

Enclosed cheque for the boys to have a drink, what a lovely thing to do. Sorry couldn’t give more as I am a pensioner. JA, Oxford

I saw service as a wireless operator on Lancaster bombers of 115 Squadron during the autumn of 1944 surviving a ‘tour’ of 30 operations across France and Germany. May your campaign for more booze for the troops prove ‘eminently successful’. HR, retired RAF Warrant Officer, Exeter

As an ex-soldier of the war, I saw service in Iraq, North Africa and Italy (where I was captured by the Germans) and I have often wondered that if a ‘squaddie’ from Afghanistan walked into my local I would love to have bought him (or them) a pint. Now the Daily Star has given me that opportunity and I enclose a ‘couple of bob’ for that purpose. Best of luck to you all. EA, 92, retired Sergeant 2/5 Battalion Queen’s Royal Regiment

Small contribution but hope they enjoy it. They deserve it. This fund is a good idea – well done. VG, Suffolk

I read about this on the BBC News Website and thought it was a great idea! My boyfriend is currently out in Afghanistan and I know he would greatly appreciate a nice cool beer when his tour ends next month! Wishing you guys all the best. You do a great job. KK, Glasgow

I saw the piece on the internet about your appeal for funds. My first thought was what an excellent idea, and an appropriate way to say thank you to all service personnel for their efforts on our behalf. As ex-RAF myself, 1943 to 1947 and ultimately on 97 Squadron, I just had to support it. I wish you every success in your endeavours. RM, Newcastle upon Tyne

Hope this will be of use to buy a few beers for our brave boys and girls. I’m so proud of them. CS

During WW2 my father served in the RAF. His most abiding memory of that time was of the Salvation Army meeting the troop train he was on and handing everybody a newspaper, a packet of cigarettes and a bar of chocolate. He never forgot this act of kindness and for the rest of his life supported the Salvation Army as best he could. In his memory I would like you to accept this small donation with my grateful thanks that the lads are returning in one piece. SS

The least I can do. God bless, and well done! BR, Kent

Thank you for finding a way in which we civilians can express our heartfelt support for the good work of our troops in a way which will mean something to them. MN, Wokingham

What a brilliant idea! A number of my friends have been deployed and I like the thought of them relaxing with a beer on their way home. Keep up the good work. HL, Newport Pagnell

I read about your fund raising appeal for beer for our brave men and women returning from Afghanistan and thought what a wonderful idea it was. Please find enclosed a cheque which I hope will bring a small bit of cheer. AF, Derbyshire

I’m sorry it’s not more but we are both OAPs and money is tight, but please give the lads a drink! RM, Tamworth

Does get me when bankers get billions and our boys can’t get a can of beer. JB, Ex-RAF 1954-1959

What a wonderful idea. I wish we could afford more for our boys. Thank you so very much. G & JG, Southampton

I wish you every success in putting a cold beer in the hand of every serviceman or woman returning from duty in Afghanistan. RL, The Netherlands

Please find enclosed a cheque for the “Beer for the Boys” campaign. I read about it on the internet and think it’s a thoroughly good idea. Best of luck with raising funds. MC, Kent

I read about the “Beer for the Boys” campaign on the BT/Yahoo News website. As an old soak of many years’ standing (or rather, staggering…!) how could I refuse such a cry for help? I hope the enclosed will be of help. MC, Surrey

It’s a privilege to be able to buy some of our lads and girls a pint. I think they deserve it!! Best wishes, excellent idea and appeal. MB

Please accept this contribution to “Beer for the Boys”. We are a small organisation with a few ex-servicemen working for us and active TA guys too. We really wanted to help you give the returning troops some beer on the plane home. If there is one thing we know at Small Beer, it is the importance of a cold beer! RE, Small Beer Ltd, Lincoln

A brilliant idea. Best wishes to you all. M & SC

What a brilliant idea! Well done to all of you and God bless you as you do your best in difficult circumstances. You ALL deserve the utmost praise – I salute you all! CG

I hope this buys some beers for our wonderful courageous troops, returning from a war zone, they are doing a fantastic job under very difficult circumstances. CR, Chichester

Thank them for all they are undertaking on our behalf. JJ, Hertfordshire

What an excellent idea. Trust the enclosed will go some small way to buying a pint for the lads. DA

From a former Captain, Royal Tank Regiment, with two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, all serving, including tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. PW, Rutland

I am sending this donation following an appeal in my office. I’m glad to be able to help bring a little cheer to these brave people who risk so much for our safety. DV, London

As an ex-RAF fireman my thoughts are with you all. PM

Sorry it’s not more, as I do live on a pension! But I feel for these young men. SH, Horsham

We wish we could send enough for them all! We are humbled to do this small thing for such great people, in whom we have so much pride. We send our love and thoughts and our gratitude. LP, Bedfordshire

Welcome home. Cheers! Have a safe journey home, back to all your family and friends. God speed and good health to you all. non

Living in Hereford I know many boys and girls who’ve been on tour and I know how things like this can make all the difference to the troops. Unfortunately I also know of too many people who’ve been injured or not returned. CH

What a great idea for our brave troops. So proud of all our soldiers. Best wishes with your appeal. Good luck to the soldiers, safe return home. DG, Sussex

Good luck boys. Anon

Cheers lads and girls, have a drink on us! Two senior citizens. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to show our appreciation. SF, Derbyshire

God bless them all. P & DW

We have a 22 year old son over in Afghan and cannot think of a better way to spend our money. R & CH, Wirral

Good luck. Have a drink on me. Sorry it couldn’t be more out of my pension. Thank you. BB, Cheshire

Hey guys, have a beer. We all think you’re doing a great job and yes, you are the best and the most professional in the world. You all prove it. Be proud of yourselves – we are proud of you all. PL, Jersey

I saw your request. Please accept this small token. I am an 85 year old pensioner and my heart goes out to all of them. Thank them all. God bless. DV

Give the lads and lassies a drink on me. Nice idea of yours. I do appreciate our armed forces and the work they do. SM, Essex

Please pass on my very best wishes to those serving, and my thanks to them for what they do on our behalf. FH, Devon

G-day from Western Australia. I saw your column on the net and I’d like to do my little bit to help you. I served with the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars in Korea in 1951 and again with the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in the mid 50’s. Hope my small donation at least gets a beer for someone. RM, Western Australia

Cheers! D & JH

Great idea and well deserved. Enjoy! Anon

Just a small token of thanks for the lads and lasses who put themselves in harm’s way on our behalf. JB

Here is a cheque to buy a few cans of beer for the boys and girls returning from Afghanistan, which I’m sure they will enjoy. OS, Oxfordshire

Please find enclosed a miniscule token of appreciation. To the health of the finest service men and women, their service is respected and appreciated. PD, Lincoln

I am pleased to send my enclosed cheque for such a worthy endeavour. My own son is currently serving at Kandahar air base. I know he would really enjoy a cold beer after being out there. I’m sure you will have a great response to this request. Thank you on behalf of all serving troops who will appreciate your efforts. CR, Oxfordshire

Well done to all the boys and girls returning and serving in Afghanistan. C & BD

I wish you luck in your efforts in Afghanistan, we are all very proud of you! I hope your colleagues enjoy their thoroughly deserved beer! CM

To face the unknown every day takes great courage, but to overcome that fear must be the greatest prize. Thanks for looking after me and my family in this and any future conflict. PG

We know they are making such a sacrifice to help people. It’s difficult to know how to pay them back but seeing this article on the internet about “Beer for the Boys” appealed to me as a lager drinker myself, and also just to say thanks to them one and all. I hope they will be refreshed on their return to Britain and united with their families to catch up with what they have missed. May our thanks go with them always for the good work they are striving to do. We will never forget the bravery of our Heroes near and far. M, Isle of Lewis

What a great cause. Thank you for the opportunity of donating. TH, London

Keep up the great work. AM

I saw your appeal on MSN and think it is a fantastic idea. It may be a small can of lager, but reinforces the larger psychological factor that they are on their way home. I wish you all the luck with your campaign both at home and abroad. SW, Cheshire

Good luck with your fund raising. I wish much more was done for our extremely brave men and women. Best wishes. JD

Welcome home boys and girls and good luck to you all. MB

Just a small contribution. I am sorry it isn’t more, but we are pensioners existing on a very small income. We live in the flight path of the aerodrome, so we are very aware of all the troop movements. God bless them all. EB

God bless you all. K & GS, St Albans

What a great idea for our troops returning home, so pleased to donate to this. MJ, Hampshire

Thanks for all you do. P & JP

Buy British ale! Hope it goes down well. TC

I remain tremendously proud of our armed services, their professionalism and bravery ensures I also remain proud to be British, in a time when our society devalues the commitment and sacrifice of these brave individuals. May I wish all a safe return home to their families and loved ones. JB, Buckinghamshire

My much loved grandson is currently in Afghanistan (on front line patrol). I am sick with worry about him and all the others out there and counting the weeks for his return in mid October. I know amongst the things he misses are a hot bath and a cold beer. THANK YOU for your efforts. VF, Lincoln

Beer for the boys (well deserved) B & MM, written on the back of a cheque

I don’t drink and rarely have the opportunity to get a round in. I can’t think of a better opportunity to say thanks and buy a beer for some of the troops as an appreciation for their efforts in the campaign in Afghanistan. GS

Please find a small cheque to help with purchase of beer for our very brave boys. God bless all of them. JB

A great idea! JL, France

Bless you all. HC, Oxford

Hope this helps toward the fund. Good luck and God bless to all. Anon

What a great idea. JM, Cheshire

Excellent idea – we’ll drink to that. PG, Guisborough

Our son was a former pilot and would have ferried some of the present serving military and if there was one thing he looked forward to when arriving home it was a cold beer. Unfortunately he came back to RAF Lyneham in a C-17 from Iraq, and was never again able to enjoy that beer. May you have every success in your campaign. R & PS, parents of a pilot killed in Iraq

Your request for donations to ‘Beer for the Boys’ caught my attention. This is one really tangible way in which we Brits can say ‘thank you’ to those who serve our country in the armed forces. I live and work overseas and understand what it is to serve in a foreign country. But I do not have to face the types of situations which many of our troops face day to day. The fact they serve as they do is a tribute to them and to those who lead them. All have far more ‘guts’ than I have. Their courage is amazing and speaks for itself. They are true professionals who need to know how much we, members of the British public, appreciate what they have done, are doing, and no doubt will continue to do. AS, Vietnam

Well done to all of you. CB, Oxfordshire

This struck a real chord with me. I work on the oil rigs in the Middle East and know only too well the feeling of that first beer when I get off the rig after a month. I can’t imagine what it must be like after a six month tour in Afghanistan! All the best to our troops who are doing a great job, and enjoy the beer! PM

Thank you for providing the opportunity to express appreciation to our Armed Forces in a tangible way. I wish you continued success in both this venture and ongoing operations. DS, Kent

My son is in the Army and I know one day he will be one of the boys. Best wishes to you all for a good job you all do. J

It was brought to our attention at our last branch meeting about your “Beer for the boys” campaign by one of our members. As our local Regiment is currently serving in Afghanistan, it was decided that we should make a donation as a sign of our appreciation of the sterling job they are doing. Royal British Legion, Carlisle and Stanwix Branch

As an army widow, I know it will be appreciated by the lads returning home, after a very dangerous, dry and sandy tour. My son in law is currently serving in Afghanistan, he certainly will enjoy a nice cold beer on the flight back. Thank you on behalf of the lads and their families. I think it is a lovely idea. May they return safe and sound. DC, Spain
